I am Jillian Sammon, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker here in Bend, OR. I have extensive training and experience in Perinatal Mood Disorders, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, EMDR and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I specialize in:
The approach I use in therapy is strengths-based, compassionate, individually focused, and understanding. I enjoy helping individuals and families discover their strengths in order to fully enjoy life, relationships, and their potential. I am mindful of different spiritual influences and incorporate individuals’ own desires, beliefs, and values into my work. I help people identify past traumas, recognize the mind/body relationship, improve communication, develop positive coping skills, and create a positive image of themselves. I believe the therapeutic relationship is extremely personal and I have great respect for where each individual is coming from and where they want to go. I look forward to continuing my own growth with each individual I work with as I join them on their journeys toward balance, healing, and recovery.
Education
Experience
During graduate school, I worked under the supervision of Bessel Van der Kolk at the Trauma Center in Boston, MA. There I was introduced to the changes that trauma and attachment issues have on our bodies and brains. I learned the value of identifying traumas to lessen their powers to hurt. I also discovered the importance of identifying the strengths that develop as a result of trauma.
After completing graduate school, I worked at a Community Health Center in Hawaii for 2 years. Here I developed a deeper understanding of the importance of culture and religion in a therapeutic relationship. I also learned how powerfully medical issues and physical health impact ones mental health. This is especially true as it relates to special needs, pregnancy, motherhood, and chronic conditions.
I continued my work in a medical setting at St. Charles Medical Center when I came to Bend in 2007. At St. Charles Medical Center I worked in the emergency room and at the in-patient unit adopting new coping skills and self-care strategies into the therapeutic process. In 2011 also started working at Deschutes County Health Services, specializing in pregnant and parenting women, fathers, and very young children. Here I furthered my education in family therapy and immensely enjoyed watching the growth of the children and families I worked with.
In 2014, following the birth of our second out of three children, I decided private practice would allow me to be more flexible for my own family and my clients. If you have any questions, or are interested in making an appointment, please send me message or give me a call.
